Physical Therapy Basics
Physical Therapy is a combination of passive modalities with therapeutic exercise to rehabilitate parts of the body that have been negatively affected by physical injury or illness. Passive modalities can include things like heat/cold therapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, massage, or joint mobilization. These are used in combination with exercises like stretching, strengthening, and postural modification to rehabilitate existing injuries and prevent new ones.
Physical Therapy was first introduced to the United States after World War I to rehabilitate returning soldiers. Primary purpose of Physical Therapy is to help a patient return to active life and independence as quickly as possible. Along with this come individual goals such as pain reduction, increase of flexibility, range of motion and strength, and correction of posture.
Physical Therapists are licensed health care professionals who have to obtain a high standard of education prior to practicing. The current minimum requirement is a Master's Degree in Physical Therapy and passing an examination to be licensed. Physical Therapists talk to their patients to evaluate their condition through a range of tests and examinations. After all necessary information has been collected, a treatment plan is designed to meet the patients' needs and goals. When patients have maximized their level of independence and mobility they are discharged from therapy.
